Our WA Play Strategy 2020 vision

ECAWA’s vision is that child-initiated and self-directed play be reinstated as a fundamental right in early education and care settings, for all Western Australian children.

We want Australia to be the best place for children to grow up. A nation which values play as a life-enhancing daily experience for all our children and young people; in their homes, early education and care, pre-schools, schools and communities.

A WA Play Strategy will articulate the critical importance of play, as well as our obligation to protect our children’s entitlement to play.

To improve play experiences for all children

We want our WA Play Strategy to be built on the views of children and young people, parents and carers, early childhood educator and care professionals, community services sector and others involved in children’s wellbeing.

Our aim is to improve play experiences for all children and address our obligations in relation to children’s right to play as stated in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Policy makers, planners and practitioners have a collective responsibility to ensure child-initiated play is embedded at the heart of decision-making throughout our society and to provide the catalyst for culture change in WA.

A playful childhood is the most basic right of childhood.  Article 31 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child specifies children’s right to play, rest, leisure and access cultural life.

Countries including Scotland, Wales, New Zealand, Sweden and Finland recognise and advocate children’s right to play.  Read about the Play Scotland government initiative, which has informed the WA Play Strategy movement and our call to government to take leadership of this critical issue.
